Parker Lewis: Bitcoin Will Settle 100% of Global Payments
Parker Lewis asserts that Bitcoin is destined to become the exclusive settlement layer for all global payments. He contends that the immense strain on the existing credit system, evidenced by $107 trillion in global debt, will compel merchants to transition towards Bitcoin's zero-fee adoption model, fundamentally reshaping the financial landscape.

Bitcoin Core changes security rules as AI makes finding code bugs dangerously easy
Bitcoin Core developers have implemented a significant policy change concerning the handling of security flaws. This new policy specifically addresses vulnerabilities that artificial intelligence (AI) tools are capable of identifying, ending a previous months-long embargo period for such flaws. The move was prompted by AI's demonstrated ability to uncover hundreds of Bitcoin-related bugs during the summer, often before human developers could detect them. This adjustment reflects a recognition of AI's increasing proficiency in code auditing and bug discovery within the Bitcoin protocol's codebase, leading to an update in how these critical issues are managed and disclosed.

Bitcoin ETFs swing back to net outflows as $636 million in withdrawals erase previous day’s inflows
Bitcoin Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) recently experienced a significant reversal in investor sentiment, recording substantial net outflows totaling $636 million. This marks a shift from the previous day's positive inflows, effectively erasing those gains. A leading factor in these outflows was BlackRock's IBIT, which alone saw withdrawals amounting to $254.1 million. In addition to IBIT, reports indicate that at least four other Bitcoin ETF products also registered net withdrawals on the same day, contributing to the overall negative trend.

Heatbit's $899 Water Heater Element Mines Bitcoin While It Heats Your Tank
Heatbit has unveiled an innovative product, the Bitwater element, an $899 water heater component designed to mine Bitcoin while simultaneously heating a water tank. This device replaces the traditional resistance heating wire found in a tank with 20 dedicated mining chips. Heatbit asserts that the Bitwater element uses the same electricity to perform both functions: generating heat for water and contributing to Bitcoin mining operations, effectively repurposing energy consumption.

Bitcoin Core changes security policy as AI makes bugs easier to find
Bitcoin Core, the primary software implementation for the Bitcoin network, has announced a significant shift in its security policy. Historically, there might have been an inclination to keep certain software vulnerabilities private for a period to allow for patching before public disclosure, a practice sometimes referred to as 'security through obscurity.' However, the project's developers now contend that this approach is becoming obsolete. The emergence of advanced AI tools, which can significantly accelerate and improve the process of identifying software bugs and potential exploits, means that attempting to keep vulnerabilities secret offers diminishing returns in terms of protection. This policy change reflects an adaptation to the evolving landscape of software security and vulnerability research, driven by artificial intelligence capabilities.

Bitcoin Optech Newsletter #428
This week's Bitcoin Optech Newsletter #428 details a new design called Lichen for a single-issuer layer 2 solution. Lichen enables users to redeem their bitcoin onchain even if the issuer, termed a "hub," is uncooperative or offline. The design involves the hub minting tokens redeemable one-to-one for bitcoin on a layer 2 ledger operated by a "sequencer." Users secure their funds via a 2-of-2 multisig contract with the hub, ensuring trust-minimized exits. Building on LN-GAP, Lichen replaces the attestation committee with an onchain dispute mechanism. Each user locks bitcoin into their dedicated 2-of-2 output with the hub, receiving an equivalent amount of layer 2 tokens. The hub also locks a portion of its own bitcoin in these outputs, up to a negotiated cap, to facilitate redemptions of tokens received from other users. In cooperative exits, the hub simply signs a settlement. For uncooperative or unresponsive hubs, users can generate a Groth16 proof demonstrating the sequencer signed a state recording the returned tokens, which is then claimed onchain. The newsletter also covers a proposal for including hash preimages in output script descriptors and provides updates on Bitcoin services, client software, and infrastructure.

Heatbit announces Bitwater - bitcoin miner water heater element
Heatbit, a company focused on innovative Bitcoin mining solutions, has announced its new product, Bitwater, a bitcoin miner water heater element. This device integrates a Bitcoin mining unit directly into a household water heater, allowing users to heat their water using the waste heat generated by the mining process. The primary goal of Bitwater is to create a dual-purpose appliance that improves energy efficiency by repurposing the heat typically dissipated by ASIC miners. By doing so, it aims to reduce electricity costs associated with water heating while simultaneously providing passive income through Bitcoin mining. This innovation is positioned as a practical solution for home users looking to contribute to the Bitcoin network's security, monetize their energy consumption, and achieve greater energy independence. The announcement highlights the potential for this technology to integrate Bitcoin mining into everyday domestic infrastructure, promoting a more sustainable and economically efficient approach to home energy management and network participation.
